Sixty miles out of Denver the road hits Eisenhower Tunnel, the highest vehicular tunnel in the United States. Past it the road drops into Summit County before the second climb, over Vail Pass, and in a storm the climb up to the tunnel is where rental cars stop.
Routes we run
Priced by the car, not by the seat
Shuttle companies charge per person, so a family of four pays four times. We quote the vehicle. The fourth passenger rides free.

Why not drive yourself
Three things rental drivers learn the hard way
The traction law is real
From September 1 to May 31, Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison. Tires need 3/16 inch of tread and a winter rating.
Ignore it and the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge. Block the highway and it becomes $500. Rental counters do not check your tires.
Altitude arrives before you do
Denver sits at 5,280 ft. Breckenridge is at 9,600 ft. Above 8,000 feet the guidance is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night.
This drive breaks that rule in two hours. Spend them in a back seat, not behind the wheel after a red-eye.
Saturday morning is not a normal drive
Denver to Vail runs 2h 10m–2h 45m in clear conditions. On peak ski weekends it stretches to 5h.
The I-70 Mountain Express Lane opens on those days between Empire Junction and Idaho Springs. Tolls run $3 to $30 depending on demand. We budget for it.
